We learn that Nagisa dies in childbirth, bringing in a girl into the world. The time factor was what doomed the Toei production. And discovering this link in their individual lives, Tomoya discovers he loves Nagisa. He wanders through as desolate world alone and unhappy … until he discovers Nagisa’s drama was her version of the same dream she had been having for years. Nightmares of a tortured, disembodied soul who must find reality inhabiting a hideous mock humanoid creature.

The story of the lonely girl and her faithful robot produced by Kyoto is reduced to a series of dreams Tomoya suffers. Nagisa graces us with sunny skies, peaceful, bright scenes, and falling cherry blossom petals. Tomoya comes in series of downpours, tempests, and storm. Toei’s strength is in the heavy symbolism that rushes at you throughout the story. Face the facts, you can’t do justice to material you developed over 23 hours (add on an hour or two for those alternative OVA) in little over an hour and a half. Tomoya’s father has little time to explain his lousy parenting much less his plan to prevent Tomoyo from making the same parental mistake.

There is the allusion (delusion?) that Tomoyo is falling for Sunohara (take time to shudder and get back to the review). Kotomi has cameo appearances as the school’s choir director, and no violin is to be seen. Other characters as Kyou and Tomoyo are given less, even appearing as student council members hellbent on preventing Nagisa from forming her Drama Club. Crucial characters as Nagisa’s parents Akio and Sanae have ample time for the story development. the vast remainder of the cast is there, but often in cameo appearance. In the Kyoto series, Sunohara is everyone’s punching bag. The only difference seen in these characters is Sunohara’s angry, violent nature. You had your basic three, sweet Nagisa Furukawa, embittered Tomoya Okazaki, and smart-mouthed Youhei Sunohara. In the movie, there would be no time for the characters to develop. By the by, Toei produced the movie (2007) before Kyoto created its dual season (2007-2009).

Things would be different in interpreting Clannad as this would be more daunting the Toei 95-minute movie versus the double season of Clannad developed by Kyoto. In the case of Air, this was a 90-minute movie covering the material of a 13-episode season. In one sense, Toei did the more laudable version in making a bizarre story more sensible, but I would have people note a crucial factor. Much of this falls back on the versions of Air I had viewed over the past month, the Toei Animation’s Air Movie and Kyoto Animation's Air the Series. Kyoto Animation had done a bang-up job on a complex story. I saw no need to tap in on Toei production. All the characters you had gotten to love had gotten past their bouts of death and things were returned to normal (or, in the world of Clannad, abnormal).

I was satisfied with the ending created by the time After Story wound its torturous way to its conclusion. Originally, I had taken a pause on Clannad Movie.
